General Discussion / Geeksphone Zero: the first Ubuntu phone ?
« on: January 04, 2013, 01:43:00 PM »
Hi

Has anyone seen http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/phone   :D

Well then. Off with android! How can I install Ubuntu ?

But from what I see, we cant even download it yet. It looks like Canonical is waiting for sales partners to jump in.
Anyone from Geeksphone care to give 'm a call ? Perhaps we can give it a testdrive ?

Would it ever work ? They say requires a 1G Cortex A9 processor - Geeksphone Zero has a 600Mhz Qualcomm Armv6 processor. Geeksphone2 perhaps ?

Because, if that OS is going to be shipping on a Nexus, I'm very tempted to go that way ... if only for the OS.
So .... http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/phone/contact-us

Bugs / Re: stuck on stock rom
« on: October 23, 2012, 03:21:03 PM »
I thought I might; but they're not available straight from the rom manager, and i suppose the phone wouldnt recognize any available updates (rom manager does that ?) ...

... so I thought I'd stick with supported development and not wonder off track too much. I need a phone, not a dev toy. But ofcourse, if *RUNE* says its good .. its gotta be good !  ;D

I was wondering - what does geekphone 'officially support', as a company ?
was 'stock rom' developed by / sponsored by geeksphone ?
could something like that happen for GZR ?

Yes ... perhaps. Strange. Once I booted into 'your' recovery from fastboot I installed cm-7.2, which was still on my phone. Then rebooted into cm7.2, opened Rom Manager and it wanted me to flash clockworkmod. If I'm not mistaking, that *is* a recovery img, right ?

That worked - downloaded the google apps zip, rebooted into recovery straight from the phone, which worked, and installed google apps. Rebooted again, got a few welcome to google screens, installed titanium backup from google play, and it saw all my backups. So I'm happy.

Hm, what could it have been ? Badly formatted recovery partition ? Broken recovery img ?

Big thanks!!

Download a recovery.img (http://sys.nodo21.org/geeksphone-zero-rom).
Turn on phone into fastboot mode.
Reboot the phone into recovery mode:
Code: [Select]
fastboot boot /path/to/recovery.img

thanks, that worked!
using your recovery img.

You can flash recovery.img:
Code: [Select]
fastboot flash recovery /path/to/recovery.img
I did that yesterday, using the recovery img from here
http://www.geeksphone.com/zerohome/ZERO_FINAL_Stock_Rom-zero-AP-20110314.zip
and could not boot into recovery mode.

is it a different image ?

Bugs / stuck on stock rom
« on: October 21, 2012, 03:15:26 PM »
Hi

I tried to install CM7.2.0 today .. but booting into recovery just ended in a black screen. I ended up flashing the firmware using fastboot as describe here - http://wiki.geeksphone.com/en/index.php?title=Flash_firmware_with_fastboot

From that firmware, it gave me 'stock froyo rom', i guess. No google apps - back to spring 2011.
I manually downloaded CM7.2.0 again and rebooted into recovery mode -- black screen again.

So, can that be a hardware issue ?

I notice, when I reboot into recovery mode, it returns as a fastboot device, even though the screen is black. If I reboot that (using ./fastboot reboot), I'm back at stock froyo rom. Otherwise, I'm stuck. Even pulling batteries doesnt reboot the phone (visibly, anyway).

So it seems I'm stuck on stock ROM - I cant even install the Google store  ...
Is there any way i can update to CM7.2.0, including google apps, without going into recovery mode ?

stuck,

Roms / Re: ZerO Community ROM

One would ask however, why can't we get these fixes upstream and integrated into the official CyanogenMod ROM for Zero?
I was wondering the same.if that would happen, this rom would just be picked up by my rom manager and I'd be prompted for a new version.I think I'm just going to wait....

I'm not sure of its related, but I've had a couple of complete freezes lately-I had to pull out the battery to get the zero back.

 Thought I'd mention it here...

Pending an answer,I installed it.first I backed up everything using titanium backup. Then I let rom manager do its thing, download the new rom, create a restore point,-I forgot to create a separate backup for adw.launcher, which you can do from the settings app- wiped data and cache, and let it reboot into recovery.

The new rom worked fine, and it took about an hour to reinstall all my goodies and settings (contacts, bookmarks, etc) using titanium, one by one , and rebuild the desktop manually. Its still working fine one day later.

This update didn't fix the "wifi doesn't connect when phone wakes up" issue, which I hoped.

7.1.0 appears to be stable. the update manager prompts me to install it.

i'd love to, but eh .. wont that wipe all data and apps from my phone ?

All sounds horrible. I'm running CM7 with 'minor bugs lets say'.

Couldnt find skype on Froyo either, and it was there in CM7. If I located it through the skype.com site on Froyo, I ended up on a page saying 'your phone is not compatible'. Which is probably why its not in the market on Froyo. But since it works on CM7, the problem is not the phone (it could be Skype has not added the handset to their list of valid handsets, and CM7 is faking to be some other phone, or that skype is not in my local dutch market, and CM7 is given out a wrong countrycode - Try getting skype through appbrain.com).

Bugs / CM7 (sometimes) not charging when asleep
« on: May 23, 2011, 01:13:36 PM »
Hi

My zero with CM7 (sometimes) (well, often) stops charging when the screen goes asleep - or so it seems. Is this is a known bug ? Does anyone else have this ?

As a result, I often run the battery flat empty, the phone dies, I connect it to a charger, it boots (which, I read, is an error and you should never let it do this because it boots incorrectly) and charges to the max. And, it doesnt really misbehave after botting like this, so thats ok, except for always having a dying phone in my pocket ...

Bugs / Re: Wifi disconect when screen is off ?
« on: May 23, 2011, 01:03:35 PM »
Confirm, I have the same, CM7. Little detail: it looks like wifi drop dead when the phone awakes, not when it goes to sleep. The phone then switches to 2g/3g, and starts trafficing right away (unless you disable that using eg a powertools widget).

The settings under
Quote
settings>wireless networks>wifi settings>advanced>wifi sleep policy
dont seem to make much difference.

What bothers me too, is that they are very illogical. who made those up ? the 'wifi sleep policy' is supposed to set "when to switch from wifi to mobile data" (what does that mean?). there are 3 exclusive options (=radiobuttons), in cm7:
  • when screen turns off
  • never when plugged in
  • never

So, for option 1 -  why would you want that ? for option 2 - so what should it do when not plugged in ? option 3 seem to be the only logical option.  Perhaps the first two should be checkboxes, and the last one should override all previous options. I see more than a bug here :-)

Anyhow, they dont seem to do a thing anyway.

I confirm these errors have gone after installing CM7. without changing the sim card. the

application launcher (in process com.android.launcher) is not responding.
was caused by a faulty widget (it had the same problems in CM7, i removed it).
